A Thin Wedge of Sky

A bike trip I took in 2003 or so.

1

My baby. She's a pure-breed mountain bike, but I won't be going up anything more than a 5% grade, today... I'm starting this ride a little west of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The goal is to reach the Philadelphia Museum of Art and return.

2

What makes this ride great is the way you constantly flip between urban/industrial and edge forest. This portion of the trail where I started parallels a highway for a short way...

3

but then moves off into the woods. The trail generally parallels the Schuylkill River. In places the trail runs over old tow paths; in others it follows old railroad rights-of-way.

4

Snag. The Schuylkill is a very slow moving, placid river.

5

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do...

6

We've drifted off the river to follow the railroad tracks.

7

And we go from forest and rural, around a bend and into pure urban landscape.

8

I find this image strange beyond strangeness. An alligator riding a chicken?

9

I ignore overpasses and factories, but there's something sad about abandoned toys.

10

But in the middle of decay, a creek still finds its way to the river.

11

I'm kind of a "steam punk". I'm fascinated with old high-tech. None of these old factories are being used for what they were built for.

12

I'm pretty sure a knitting mill wouldn't need a pair of satellite dishes... And aren't Rambo and Regar the stars of some action movie?

13

Ah, sweet nector of life. Well, the low-cal version, anyway.

14

These daisies were popping up all over.

15

The trail here runs right between a commuter rail line and a heavy freight rail line.

16

Another strange encounter. An altar for chicken worshipers?

19

I just can't get over all the daisies.

20

The very last daisy.

22

Getting closer to the city, you find traces of communities that seem to have disappeared.

23

The Shawmont train station is closed; there are places full of ruined steel and stone that look like they used to be factories, but are now completely overgrown.

24

The daisies are everywhere!
